Frequently asked questions

Does my wall show how much I earn?
No. Plaques show a tier and how long someone has backed you — never a dollar amount — and there is no public earnings total. The only place amounts appear is the optional funding-goal progress bar, and only if you turn it on.
Do I control who appears on my wall?
Yes. Backers who prefer privacy can back you anonymously, you decide which tiers exist on your wall at all, and every sponsor message is moderated before it appears. Nothing shows up that you didn’t make room for.
Does SponsoredBy hold my money?
No. Backings are paid directly to your own Stripe account. We never custody your funds — we take a small platform fee and Stripe takes its processing fee.
Do backers need an account?
Yes — backers sign in (passwordless) so support is tied to a real person and so we can show or hide their name as they choose.
Can I back someone anonymously?
Yes. When you back a creator you can choose to appear publicly on their wall or stay anonymous. Anonymous backings still count toward the creator’s totals.
Do I have to verify my identity to back someone?
No. Identity verification is optional and no backing amount requires it — backings are charged on the creator’s own Stripe account, so the creator is the merchant of record. See Identity verification for backers.
How do I cancel a monthly backing?
Open your Sponsoring page and cancel anytime. The creator keeps what was already paid; you won’t be charged again.
How do I get a verified checkmark?
Connect and verify a social handle or your domain from Edit profile. See Verify your social handles.
How do I delete my data or account?
Follow our Data Deletion instructions, or download a copy first from your settings.
Which countries can receive payouts?
Receiving money currently needs a United States–based Stripe account and bank. Anyone anywhere can create a wall and share it, and backers can be in any country. More payout countries are coming. See Where SponsoredBy works.
Can I back a creator from outside the US?
Yes. Backers aren’t restricted by country — if Stripe accepts your card, you can back someone. The one exception is very large backings, which usually go by bank transfer and need a U.S. bank account. Everything is priced in U.S. dollars.
How do I get approved for higher backing amounts?
Every wall has a ceiling on how large a single backing can be. Paid plans let you raise your own limit up to that ceiling; going above it is a manual review, because a bigger backing means more chargeback exposure for both of us. Email us with a bit about your wall and what you need, and we’ll talk it through. Tiers above your ceiling show as “By request” until then.
Who is responsible for delivering the perks a creator offers?
The creator is. When you back someone, the payment is charged on their own Stripe account and the arrangement is between the two of you — SponsoredBy provides the platform but isn’t a party to it. Our Terms require creators to describe perks accurately and fulfil them. See Who delivers the perks.
Can I get a refund?
Ask the creator — they’re the merchant of record on their own backings, so refunds are theirs to issue from their Stripe dashboard. When a backing is refunded we return our platform fee too. See Refunds, chargebacks & cancellation.
What happens if a backer files a chargeback?
The dispute lands on the creator’s own Stripe account, since that’s where the payment was made, and a lost dispute is charged to their balance along with Stripe’s fee. Creators can size that exposure under Getting backed → Backing limits. See Refunds, chargebacks & cancellation.
How do I report a wall or a sponsorship?
Every wall has a Report this wall link in its footer, and each individual plaque has its own report link. Both open a short form that goes straight to our trust & safety queue, where reports are reviewed by people. You can also email abuse@sponsoredby.io.
Are backings tax-deductible donations?
No — a backing is an ordinary payment to a creator for what they offer, not a charitable donation, and most creators here aren’t registered charities. We can’t give tax advice, so check with a tax professional about your own situation. Creators receiving money should know that Stripe, not SponsoredBy, issues any 1099-K.
Can I remove my plaque from a creator’s wall?
Plaques are permanent — cancelling a monthly backing stops future charges but doesn’t erase the support that already happened. If you’d rather not be publicly associated with a creator, back anonymously at checkout: it still counts toward their totals, but your name never appears. Need an existing backing made anonymous? Do I need to verify my identity before I can be paid?
Yes — creators verify at least one social handle or their own domain before connecting Stripe. It takes a minute and it’s what keeps SponsoredBy a network of real, accountable people. Start with Verify your handles.
