Verify GitHub
GitHub is the quickest handle to verify — it takes one sign-in, and it works for an organization as well as a personal account.
- Open Edit profile. Go to Edit profile and find the Verified social handles section.
- Type your handle in the GitHub row. Just the username — octocat. A leading @ is fine. To verify an organization instead, put the organization’s name here.
- Press Save handles. The Verify button only appears once the handle is saved.
- Press Verify and sign in to GitHub. We ask for read-only access to your profile and org memberships. We never write anything to your account.
When it works you’ll see GitHub verified. and a green check on your wall.
Verifying an organization
If the handle you entered isn’t the account you sign in with, we treat it as an organization and check that you own it. Being a member isn’t enough — GitHub has to list you with the owner role. If you’re not an owner you’ll get:
You’re not an owner of the GitHub organization “…”. Log in with an account that owns it, or set your personal GitHub handle instead.
Once an organization verifies, we replace what you typed with GitHub’s official spelling of the org name.
Careful: editing a handle after it’s verified removes the checkmark, and you’ll need to verify again. Changing capitalisation counts as an edit.
